Tums for indigestion

Indigestion can feel like upper-abdominal fullness, burning, belching, nausea, or discomfort after eating. Tums contains calcium carbonate, which neutralises stomach acid and may help when acid is contributing. It will not correct every cause of indigestion. Acid reflux, gastritis, gallstones, Helicobacter pylori infection, hiatus hernia, and peptic ulcer can all require different evaluation or treatment. Follow the directions on your own product and do not exceed the stated amount. Ask a pharmacist before use if you have kidney disease or take regular medicines; calcium can affect absorption of some treatments. Separate it from iron supplements when advised. Smaller meals, slower eating, limiting personal triggers, and staying upright after food may reduce discomfort. If indigestion keeps returning, a clinician may check for reflux, ulcer disease, infection, or gallbladder symptoms and decide whether another acid reflux medication is appropriate. Avoid masking a changing symptom with frequent antacid use.

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden abdominal pain, chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Arrange a medical review for persistent indigestion, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, or unexplained weight loss. These features need assessment because indigestion can have causes that Tums cannot treat.

Ask whether your pattern sounds acid-related, how long to try an antacid, and whether medicines or supplements could be contributing. Mention pain location, meal timing, bowel changes, vomiting, and any family history of digestive disease.
