What should you know about tummy itching during early pregnancy?

Early pregnancy can coincide with dry skin, sensitivity to products, heat, and stretching as the abdomen changes. Itching with redness, scaling, cracks, or a defined rash can also occur with atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, asteatotic eczema, psoriasis, hives, or a skin yeast infection. Scabies may cause intense itch with small bumps and itching in other household members; lichen planus has a different rash pattern and needs examination. These possibilities cannot be separated reliably from the symptom alone. The timing, distribution, visible changes, new products, medicines, and exposure to others with itching are useful clues.

Use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm and brief, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid new fragranced soaps or essential oils. Pat rather than scratch; cool compresses and short nails can reduce skin injury. Before using a medicated cream, antihistamine, or herbal product, check its suitability with your obstetric or medical team. Take a clear photograph if a rash comes and goes, and record where the itching occurs, whether it is worse at night, and any new exposure. A clinician can inspect the skin and decide whether testing or pregnancy-compatible treatment is needed.

Contact your maternity or medical team soon for severe or persistent itching, a spreading rash, blisters, facial swelling, or sleep-disrupting symptoms. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, faintness, rapidly increasing swelling, or signs of infection such as warmth, pus, fever, or severe tenderness. Also report itching that is widespread or involves the palms or soles, especially without an obvious rash, because pregnancy-related causes may require assessment and monitoring. Do not wait for a rash to appear if the itch is intense or escalating.
