Tubular fibroadenoma

Tubular fibroadenoma is a type of fibroadenoma, formed from breast gland tissue and supporting connective tissue. It may feel smooth, firm, and mobile under the skin. Hormonal changes can influence its size or tenderness, and several breast lumps can occur at once.

A breast examination cannot always identify the tissue type by feel alone. Ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid and describe its borders; a biopsy may be recommended when imaging or examination leaves uncertainty.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new lump, even if it is not painful. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with your cycle, and any nipple or skin changes. Keep imaging appointments and ask how the lump will be monitored.

If the lump is confirmed as a fibroadenoma and remains stable, observation may be suitable. Removal may be discussed if it grows, causes symptoms, is large, or cannot be confidently diagnosed.

Seek prompt assessment for a lump that is rapidly changing, fixed, associated with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness, warmth, or swelling in the armpit. These findings do not diagnose cancer, but they should not be ignored.

Ask what the imaging shows, whether a biopsy is needed, how often the lump should be reviewed, what changes should trigger an earlier visit, and whether excision would leave a noticeable scar.
