What should you know about trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine?

Inactivated means the vaccine cannot cause influenza infection. Trivalent refers to protection designed around three influenza strains selected for the relevant season. The immune response develops after vaccination and can lessen the chance of serious illness, although vaccination does not prevent every respiratory infection.

The formulation and recommended groups can vary by season and local guidance. A clinician considers age, pregnancy, long-term conditions, previous reactions and current health before vaccination.

Tell the vaccinator about a severe previous reaction to an influenza vaccine or any component, a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome, pregnancy, immune problems or a current fever. Bring your vaccination record if available.

A sore arm, tiredness, mild fever or muscle aches may occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids and use symptom relief only if suitable for you. The vaccine does not replace hand hygiene or staying home when unwell.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, fainting or sudden severe weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician if a fever is persistent, symptoms are worsening or you are concerned about a reaction.
