Trichloroacetic acid treatment for cervical dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia describes abnormal cells on the cervix. It is not the same as invasive cervical cancer, and the correct next step depends on the grade, location and extent of the cell changes. Trichloroacetic acid, also called TCA, causes a controlled chemical injury when applied to tissue. Its use on the cervix is different from a cosmetic facial peel or spot treatment, so products intended for skin must never be self-applied internally.

Assessment may involve cervical examination, a screening result review and, when indicated, colposcopy or a biopsy. Those findings help a specialist decide whether observation, removal of abnormal tissue or another approach is suitable.

Take your screening and biopsy reports to the appointment and tell the clinician about pregnancy, possible pregnancy, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, allergies and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask which exact product and application method are being proposed, and whether a biopsy or another treatment is needed first.

Follow the clinic's aftercare instructions closely. Depending on the procedure, you may be advised to avoid intercourse, tampons or swimming while the cervix heals. Keep every recommended follow-up visit, because visual healing does not by itself show whether abnormal cells have cleared.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, faintness or discharge with a strong unpleasant smell. Seek urgent medical help if bleeding makes you feel weak or dizzy, or if severe pain develops suddenly. These symptoms can have causes other than the treatment and should be assessed rather than watched at home.
