What viral laryngitis means

Viral laryngitis is inflammation around the voice box, often occurring with a cold. Hoarseness or loss of voice happens because swollen vocal folds cannot vibrate normally. A sore throat, dry cough and tiredness may accompany it. Acid reflux can also irritate the voice box, so persistent symptoms may have more than one contributor.

Practical relief

Speak as little as possible and use a quiet, natural voice; whispering can strain the vocal folds. Sip water regularly, use warm drinks if soothing, and add moisture to dry air. Avoid smoking, vaping and alcohol while the throat is irritated. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief for you. Antibiotics do not treat a viral cause.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling.
