Treatment for Sun Burn

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction after ultraviolet exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness, peeling, and sometimes blisters can appear as the skin reacts. A sunburn can also leave temporary darkening or uneven tone after the redness settles; a persistent mark should be assessed rather than assumed to be a simple burn.

Move out of the sun, use a cool damp cloth or cool shower, and apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and leave blisters intact. Do not scrub peeling skin or apply ice directly. Once the skin has healed, a clinician can discuss options for lingering pigmentation; active sunburn is not the time for a peel or light-based procedure.

Get medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or signs of infection such as spreading redness and drainage. Sunburn involving the eyes, face with marked swelling, or a young child warrants prompt assessment.
