Treatment for steroid induced hiccups

Hiccups are repeated involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. A steroid can influence the nerves or brain pathways involved in that reflex, especially after a dose change, but reflux, gastritis, alcohol, abdominal irritation, and other medicines can also contribute. Note when the hiccups began, the steroid name and dose, meals, sleep disruption, and any heartburn or abdominal pain. This information helps separate a medicine effect from another problem.

Do not stop a prescribed steroid suddenly or alter its dose without the prescriber’s advice. Sip water, eat slowly, avoid large meals and fizzy drinks, and keep a brief symptom diary. The clinician may adjust timing, reduce or change the steroid when medically appropriate, or prescribe treatment for persistent hiccups. If reflux is involved, an acid reflux medication may be considered after a review rather than borrowed from someone else.
