Treatment for spotting after your period

Light bleeding between periods can follow hormonal contraception, ovulation, vaginal dryness or irritation. It can also occur with an infection such as Chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids or changes in the womb lining. A symptom does not identify the cause by itself.

The clinician may ask when the spotting occurs, whether it follows sex, how long it lasts, and whether pain, discharge or pregnancy is possible. Examination and tests are chosen from that history.

Record dates, colour, amount, triggers and associated symptoms. Arrange an appointment if spotting recurs, follows sex, happens after menopause, or is accompanied by pelvic pain or unusual discharge. Testing may include a pregnancy test, infection screening, cervical assessment or imaging.

Treatment might involve changing contraception, treating an infection, or addressing a polyp or fibroid. Do not use leftover antibiotics or insert products into the vagina before an examination unless a clinician advises it.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Emergency assessment is also needed after menopause if bleeding is new or unexplained.
