Treatment for small cell lung cancer stage 4

Stage 4 small cell lung cancer has spread beyond the original lung region. The team considers where it has travelled, your breathing, general health, previous treatment and your priorities. The plan may change as symptoms, scans or treatment effects change.

Chemotherapy can reach cancer cells throughout the body. Immunotherapy may be combined with systemic treatment for selected people. Radiotherapy can ease symptoms or treat a particular site, and whole brain radiotherapy may be discussed when cancer affects the brain or prevention is part of the plan.

Ask what the first treatment is intended to achieve, how it will be given and when response will be assessed. Tell the team about breathlessness, pain, appetite, sleep, mood and your ability to manage daily tasks.

Keep an up-to-date medicine list and follow infection precautions provided by your team.

Seek urgent help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, fainting, coughing blood or new confusion. New weakness, a seizure, severe headache or trouble speaking also needs immediate assessment.

During treatment, report fever, shaking chills, worsening cough, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting or a new widespread rash promptly. Ask which number to use at night and do not wait for the next infusion visit when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
