Treatment for Rash Under Breast

Warmth, sweat, rubbing, and trapped moisture can soften and inflame the skin beneath the breast. This pattern is called intertrigo. A bright red, moist, tender rash with small spots around its edge may suggest yeast; a sharply defined scaly patch may have another cause. Contact dermatitis can follow a new bra fabric, detergent, deodorant, or cream. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, ringworm, or scabies can also affect nearby skin.

Gently wash and dry the fold, including after sweating. Pat rather than rub, choose breathable clothing and a well-fitting bra, and change damp fabric promptly. Avoid fragranced products and powders that cake in the fold. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or barrier product depending on the appearance. Do not apply a steroid or combination cream repeatedly without advice, since it can worsen or disguise an infection.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is painful, cracked, oozing, foul-smelling, recurrent, or not improving with careful drying. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, or feeling unwell. A clinician should also review a one-sided persistent rash, a lump, nipple change, or bleeding rather than assuming it is simple fold irritation.

Ask whether the pattern fits intertrigo, yeast, contact dermatitis, or another condition; whether a swab or examination is needed; and how to prevent recurrence while keeping the fold comfortable.
