Treatment for preeclampsia after pregnancy

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related blood pressure disorder that can occur after delivery as well as before birth. It may affect the brain, liver, kidneys or blood-clotting system, and symptoms are not always obvious.

A clinician may check blood pressure, urine and blood tests, then prescribe an antihypertensive. Magnesium treatment may be considered when seizure risk is a concern. Follow-up can include repeated blood pressure checks and review of medicines while breastfeeding.

Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and attend every blood pressure review. Rest when possible, keep a record of readings if your clinician asks, and tell the team about headache, swelling, breathlessness or reduced urine.

Do not change treatment because a reading improves. Ask which pain medicines are suitable, when medicines can be adjusted, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Seek emergency care for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain under the ribs, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, a seizure, or very high blood pressure. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or unwell.
