Treatment for a PCL Sprain

Short answer
Treatment for a PCL sprain depends on ligament severity and knee stability, and may include activity changes, a brace, physiotherapy, or surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Protection
- A brace or crutches may be prescribed for stability.
- Rehabilitation
- Physiotherapy builds motion, leg strength, and control.
- Avoid
- Running, jumping, and twisting while the knee is unstable.
What a PCL sprain involves
The posterior cruciate ligament helps limit backward movement of the shin bone relative to the thigh bone. A sprain may stretch the ligament or tear some or all of its fibres. It can happen when the front of the knee strikes an object, the knee bends forcefully, or a sports injury occurs. Pain, swelling, reduced confidence on stairs, and a feeling of instability can occur. A clinician examines the knee and may use imaging to assess the ligament and associated injuries.
How recovery is supported
Reduce activities that cause pain, swelling, or buckling. Early care may include elevation, a wrapped cold pack for comfort, and a brace or crutches when prescribed. Follow the weight-bearing instructions you were given; do not test the knee with running, jumping, or twisting. Physiotherapy can restore motion and build control in the quadriceps, hip, and whole leg while protecting the healing ligament. Kinesiology taping may be used as an adjunct by a trained professional, but it does not replace assessment or rehabilitation. More severe or combined injuries may require an orthopaedic discussion about reconstruction.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment after a knee injury if swelling, pain, or instability limits walking. Seek prompt care for a locked knee, inability to bear weight, marked deformity, or swelling that develops quickly. Emergency assessment is needed for a cold or pale foot, new numbness, severe calf swelling, or rapidly increasing pain. Contact your clinician if the brace causes skin injury or if the knee repeatedly gives way during the recovery plan.
Questions for your doctor
Is the PCL stretched or torn, and are other knee structures injured? Do I need a brace or crutches, and for how long? Which exercises and weight-bearing limits apply? When can I cycle, run, or return to sport? What findings would make surgery worth discussing?

Questions people ask
Does every PCL sprain need surgery?
No. Treatment depends on the tear, knee stability, other injuries, symptoms, and response to rehabilitation.
When can I return to sport after a PCL sprain?
Return is gradual and depends on comfortable movement, strength, knee control, and sport-specific testing agreed with your clinician or physiotherapist.
