Treatment for measles in infants

Measles is a contagious viral illness that may cause fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a spreading rash. An infant may also have poor feeding, fewer wet nappies or unusual sleepiness. A fever or swollen glands can occur with many illnesses, so these symptoms do not establish measles by themselves. Keep the baby away from other children and vulnerable people while seeking advice, and tell the clinic about possible exposure before arriving.

Follow the clinician's instructions for fluids, feeding and any fever medicine; use only products and doses suitable for the infant's age and weight. Offer breast milk or usual formula frequently, and watch wet nappies. Keep the room comfortable, clean the eyes gently with separate clean material, and allow rest. Seek urgent care if the baby has breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, a seizure, severe drowsiness, confusion, repeated vomiting, marked dehydration, or cannot feed. Get prompt advice if fever persists, the baby has very few wet nappies, develops a rapidly worsening rash, or seems significantly less responsive. Call ahead because measles spreads easily, allowing the service to reduce exposure to other patients.
