Treatment for lipoma

A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump under the skin that often moves slightly when pressed. It can occur on the trunk, neck, shoulders, arms or thighs. Many are found incidentally and cause no symptoms, but a lump that is deep, firm, fixed, painful or changing may not be a typical lipoma. A clinician may examine it and recommend imaging or another test when the features are uncertain.

Do not squeeze, puncture or repeatedly massage the lump. Note its location, approximate size, tenderness and any change in movement or skin appearance. If examination supports a lipoma and it is not causing trouble, monitoring may be reasonable. Lipoma Removal is an option when it causes discomfort, catches on clothing, limits movement, is cosmetically bothersome, or cannot be confidently identified. The clinician will explain the procedure, expected wound care and whether tissue will be examined.

Arrange an assessment for any new or uncertain Skin Lumps. Seek prompt review if a lump grows quickly, becomes hard or fixed, causes persistent pain, produces numbness, affects movement, or develops redness, warmth, drainage or an open wound. Sudden severe pain or rapid swelling deserves urgent advice. These features do not identify the cause by themselves, but they should not be ignored.
