Treatment for itching grey hair

Grey hair itself does not usually create an itch. The sensation may come from a dry scalp, a reaction to shampoo or hair dye, flaking inflammation, or an infection. Asteatotic Eczema can cause dry, cracked, itchy skin, while Atopic Dermatitis and Contact Dermatitis can cause irritation or an itchy rash. Psoriasis may produce thicker, scaly areas. Scabies or a skin yeast infection needs different treatment, so appearance, timing and affected areas matter.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, rinse products thoroughly, and avoid scratching or picking at scale. Pause a newly introduced dye, oil, fragrance or styling product if symptoms began after using it. A pharmacist or clinician may suggest a moisturising scalp product or a medicated treatment when inflammation, flaking or infection is suspected. Do not apply steroid or antifungal products inside the ear or over broken skin without advice. Keep a note of triggers, scale, redness and whether anyone close to you is itchy.

Arrange a dermatology review if itching persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or comes with marked scale, sores, hair breakage or patchy loss. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product. Itching that affects several household members, especially at night, also needs assessment because contagious causes require coordinated treatment.
