Treatment for Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers

Ichthyosis is a disorder of the outer skin layer. In an affected golden retriever, the skin may shed larger flakes and feel dry, while the coat can look dull. The condition is not the same as simple dirt or an occasional bath-related dryness. A veterinarian may examine the coat and skin, review the dog’s history, and look for infection or another cause of scaling.

Use only products recommended for dogs. A veterinary plan may include regular bathing with a suitable medicated or moisturising wash, careful rinsing, and an emollient approach to support the skin barrier. Do not peel scales forcefully or apply human creams, essential oils, or household products. Keep bedding clean, watch for scratching, and follow the schedule even when the coat looks better. Grooming should be gentle so the skin is not abraded.

Contact a veterinarian if scaling suddenly worsens or the dog develops redness, odour, greasy areas, hair loss, sores, discharge, marked itching, reduced appetite, or unusual tiredness. Painful skin or signs of spreading infection need prompt assessment. A flare can require a change in the care plan rather than more frequent bathing at home.

Ask which cleanser and moisturising product fit your dog, how often bathing is appropriate, and how to recognise a secondary infection. Ask whether the coat, ears, paws, or other skin areas need separate checks.
