Treatment for fowl cholera in chickens

Fowl cholera is a bacterial disease of birds and is different from human cholera. It can spread through a flock and may cause sudden deaths, weakness, fever-like behaviour, swollen joints, breathing problems, or loose droppings. These signs can overlap with other poultry diseases, so a veterinarian may need an examination and laboratory testing before treatment is chosen.

Separate sick birds from the rest of the flock and use dedicated footwear, clothing, feeders, and water containers where possible. Contact a veterinarian promptly; do not use leftover antibiotics or medicines intended for people. Follow advice about testing, approved medication, withdrawal periods, carcass disposal, cleaning, and disinfection. Replace contaminated bedding and reduce crowding. Supportive fluids may be considered by the veterinarian, but sick birds that cannot drink need professional care rather than improvised treatment.

Seek urgent veterinary advice when several birds become ill, deaths occur suddenly, breathing is laboured, birds cannot stand, or drinking stops. Keep people and other animals away from carcasses and contaminated equipment until the veterinarian advises how to handle them. For human diarrhoea or dehydration, use medical services; poultry disease treatment is not a substitute for human care.

Ask which tests are needed, how long birds should remain isolated, which medicines are licensed for the flock, how to manage eggs and meat during treatment, and how housing should be cleaned before birds mix again.
