Treatment for an Allergic Cold

An allergic cold commonly causes repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, clear watery discharge and congestion. It may flare after exposure to pollen, house-dust mites or an animal. A common cold is caused by an infection and may bring a sore throat, thicker mucus, cough or feeling generally unwell. The patterns can overlap, so duration, triggers and associated symptoms help a clinician assess the cause. Allergic symptoms are not contagious, while an infectious cold can spread to others.

Limit exposure to the suspected trigger where practical. Keep bedroom fabrics clean according to care instructions, reduce dust-collecting clutter, and keep pets out of sleeping areas if an animal is linked to symptoms. Saline nasal rinsing may clear irritants when performed with safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician may recommend an antihistamine or a nasal spray; use it as directed and check before combining products. Decongestant sprays should not be used for longer than the product instructions because congestion can rebound.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, repeatedly disturb sleep, interfere with work, or do not fit a typical allergy pattern. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, severe wheezing, faintness or a rapidly spreading rash. A clinician can check for asthma, sinus problems or another cause when nasal symptoms are accompanied by facial pain, high fever, or worsening one-sided blockage.

Ask which trigger is most plausible, whether a nasal spray or tablet suits your other medicines, how long to try it, and whether allergy testing is useful. Mention pregnancy, glaucoma, high blood pressure, asthma and any previous medicine reactions.
