Treatment for actinic keratosis on the face

Actinic keratosis is a sun-related area of abnormal surface skin that may feel rough, gritty, or scaly and can be easier to feel than see. The face, ears, scalp, and backs of the hands are common sites. A clinician may inspect the lesion with magnification and decide whether it fits actinic keratosis or needs sampling. Because some lesions can develop into squamous cell carcinoma, a changing or unusually thick area deserves review.

A small, distinct lesion may be frozen with cryotherapy. Several lesions or a broader sun-damaged field may be treated with prescription topical 5-fluorouracil, imiquimod, or photodynamic therapy. These options can cause redness, crusting, soreness, or peeling while abnormal cells are being cleared. Use the prescribed schedule exactly, protect the healing skin from sunlight, and avoid picking. A skin cancer screening visit can help identify additional areas that need attention.

Arrange prompt assessment for a lesion that grows, becomes thick or tender, bleeds, forms a persistent sore, or fails to heal. Contact the treatment team for severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or an unexpected reaction to a prescribed cream. Do not keep applying a home acid or cosmetic product to a suspicious facial lesion because it can obscure changes and delay diagnosis.

Ask whether the lesion needs a biopsy, why one treatment fits its size and location, how nearby eyes and lips will be protected, what reaction is expected, and when the treated area should be checked again.
