What to know about CO2 laser treatment

A carbon dioxide laser removes or heats targeted layers of skin to encourage smoother texture and more even appearance. It may be considered for wrinkles, selected scars, rough sun-damaged texture, or other carefully assessed concerns. Ablative treatment generally creates more visible healing than gentler fractional approaches. The device, settings, and treatment area should be chosen after examining your skin and discussing pigment-change risk.

Before treatment, disclose active skin disease, a history of cold sores, medicines that affect healing, and any tendency to form raised scars. Follow the clinic’s cleansing and antiviral instructions when prescribed. Afterward, expect redness, swelling, sensitivity, peeling, or crusting according to depth. Keep the area clean, moisturised as directed, shielded from sunlight, and do not remove flakes or restart irritating products until advised. Attend follow-up so healing can be checked.

Contact the treating clinic if pain or swelling is worsening, redness is spreading, the area becomes increasingly warm, drainage develops, or you develop fever or eye symptoms. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat after any treatment. Unexpected darkening or lightening should also be reviewed rather than treated with additional products on your own.
