Treating Diaper Rash With Open Sores

Broken skin means the irritated area has lost part of its protective barrier. Moisture and rubbing can delay healing, while yeast or bacterial infection may cause marked redness, weeping, crusting or worsening tenderness. Open sores can also follow prolonged irritation, so a clinician may need to examine the pattern rather than relying on a photograph or label.

Change diapers often and rinse the area with lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth or an unperfumed product, then pat dry without lifting scabs or rubbing the sores. Apply only a clinician-recommended protective layer over intact and affected skin, and allow brief air exposure when practical. Avoid talc, alcohol, fragranced wipes and antiseptics unless prescribed. Ask whether emollient therapy or topical antifungal treatment is appropriate; do not put medication into a deep or bleeding wound without advice.

Seek prompt medical advice for open sores, especially in a newborn, or if there is fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, spreading redness, swelling, pus, blisters, bleeding or severe pain. Urgent assessment is needed if the baby seems seriously unwell. Arrange follow-up when the area is not improving or keeps breaking down.
