Can an abscess be treated without antibiotics?

An abscess is a pocket of pus beneath the skin, often causing a painful, warm, swollen lump. Antibiotics may not reach the centre of a closed pocket well, so a clinician may recommend opening and draining it. Antibiotics can still be needed when infection is spreading, the surrounding skin is inflamed, or a person has factors that increase risk. Keep the area clean and covered with a clean dressing if it is leaking. Wash your hands before and after touching it, do not share towels, and avoid shaving or friction over the lump. A warm, moist compress may ease discomfort, but it should not replace an examination. Do not pierce, cut or squeeze the abscess, and do not use leftover antibiotics. A healthcare professional can decide whether drainage, a swab, pain relief or prescribed medicine is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical care if the abscess is rapidly enlarging, very painful, near the eye, on the face or genitals, or surrounded by spreading redness. Fever, chills, weakness, red streaks, or difficulty moving the nearby area also need urgent assessment. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or repeated abscesses should arrange advice early. Do not assume a lump is an abscess if the diagnosis is uncertain.
