Tranexamic acid uses in pregnancy: what to know

Tranexamic acid helps a formed blood clot remain in place by slowing the breakdown of fibrin, a protein that supports clotting. It may be used for significant bleeding in selected situations, but bleeding during pregnancy can also signal a problem that needs examination. The medicine does not identify or treat the cause of bleeding, and it should not be used to delay an assessment.

A clinician may consider the source and amount of bleeding, pain, examination findings, medicines, clotting history, and kidney health before recommending it. Do not use someone else’s tablets or a leftover prescription.

Contact your maternity team or obstetric clinician before taking tranexamic acid for bleeding. Tell them how far along the pregnancy is, when the bleeding began, whether it is increasing, and whether you have cramps, dizziness, fever, or fluid loss. Keep the packet or medicine name available and mention any history of blood clots, kidney disease, seizures, or medicines that affect clotting.

Seek urgent maternity care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Call emergency services if you feel seriously unwell or cannot travel safely. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether tranexamic acid has been taken.
