What should you know about tranexamic acid use?

For heavy menstrual bleeding, tranexamic acid helps reduce blood loss by making clots less likely to dissolve too soon. It does not treat every cause of heavy periods, so an assessment may still be needed for issues such as fibroids, hormonal changes, or anaemia.

In dermatology, a clinician may consider tranexamic acid for melasma, a condition that causes darker patches, particularly on the face. Skin treatment may involve a topical product or another route; these choices are not interchangeable.

Follow the prescribed instructions and check whether the medicine is intended for a particular phase of your menstrual cycle or a defined skin routine. Give your clinician a complete list of medicines, including hormonal contraception, supplements, and non-prescription products.

Do not double a missed dose unless your prescriber specifically tells you to. Keep tablets in their original packaging and do not use someone else’s prescription. If it is being used for pigmentation, use broad-spectrum sun protection and avoid irritating products that make the skin inflamed.

Get urgent care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing blood, painful swelling in one leg, sudden weakness, or a sudden vision change. Contact your clinician promptly if bleeding remains heavy, you feel faint, or facial skin becomes severely swollen or blistered.

Ask what problem the medicine is intended to address, how you should take or apply it, when to expect a review, and whether your history of clots, kidney disease, or vision symptoms affects suitability.
