Can tranexamic acid shorten a period?

During menstruation, the womb lining sheds and small blood clots help limit bleeding. Tranexamic acid helps these clots remain in place for longer, which may make bleeding lighter. Some people may notice fewer heavy days, while others mainly notice less flow without a shorter cycle. It is not a hormonal medicine and does not postpone the next period.

Heavy bleeding can have several explanations, including fibroids, adenomyosis, hormonal changes, a bleeding disorder, or pregnancy-related causes. Reducing flow does not identify or remove the underlying reason, so ongoing heavy periods deserve an assessment.

Use tranexamic acid only as directed by a qualified clinician or the product instructions.
