What should you know about topical treatment for hives?

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear and fade in different places. The reaction happens in deeper skin layers, so a moisturiser, cool compress, or soothing lotion may ease surface discomfort without stopping new welts. Sedating or fragranced products can irritate skin or make it harder to notice worsening symptoms. A clinician may recommend an oral antihistamine when hives are active or recurring.

Use cool, damp compresses, lukewarm water, loose clothing, and gentle fragrance-free moisturiser if it feels soothing. Avoid rubbing, overheating, and any newly suspected trigger. Take medicines only as directed, especially if a product causes drowsiness or you have other health conditions. Keep a brief record of foods, medicines, infections, pressure, heat, and timing to help identify patterns.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; faintness; or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal angioedema or a severe allergic reaction. Arrange medical review when hives keep returning, last longer than expected, disrupt sleep, or occur with fever, bruising, or joint symptoms.
