What should you know about topical steroids for eczema?

They are anti-inflammatory medicines placed on the skin, usually during a flare. The suitable product depends on the body area, the severity of the eczema, the person's age and the skin's condition.

Eczema can make the skin inflamed, itchy and more vulnerable to cracking. A topical steroid reduces local inflammation, which can ease redness, warmth, swelling and itch. It does not remove every trigger of eczema, so moisturising and trigger avoidance remain part of a skin-care plan.

Strength matters. Thin skin such as the face, eyelids, folds and genital area generally needs extra caution, while thicker skin may need a different preparation. Using a stronger product, covering the area, or continuing beyond the advised course can increase the chance of skin thinning and other local effects.

Apply the medicine to active eczema only, using the amount and frequency given by your clinician or pharmacist. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands are the treated area. Spread it gently over the affected skin; rubbing hard can worsen irritation.

Use an unperfumed moisturiser regularly to support the skin barrier. If both products are advised, ask how to space them. Do not share a tube, use a leftover prescription on a new rash, or put a steroid near the eyes unless a clinician specifically directs you.

If the flare is not settling, or returns as soon as treatment stops, arrange a review. The diagnosis, medicine strength, application technique or maintenance plan may need reassessment.

Contact a clinician promptly if the skin becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, rapidly worse, or develops spreading crusting, pus or blisters. These changes can signal infection or another condition needing different treatment.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, or a widespread blistering or peeling rash. Arrange medical advice for eczema involving the eyes, a baby, or a large area, and whenever treatment causes marked burning, new skin changes or concern about overuse.

Ask which areas should receive the steroid, how much to apply, how often to use it, and when to stop or step down. Clarify whether the face, folds, hands or eyelids need a separate plan.
