Topical Steroid for Lichen Planus: What to Know

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can present with itchy, raised or flat-topped bumps and patches. A topical corticosteroid dampens local inflammation, which may lessen itch, redness and thickening. It controls activity in treated skin; it does not remove the underlying tendency for lichen planus to recur.

Skin, scalp, mouth and genital areas need different plans. Thicker skin may tolerate a different preparation from thin or sensitive sites. Lichen planus may also leave darker or lighter marks after inflammation settles, so colour change does not always mean active disease.

Apply the prescribed layer to the affected areas only, using the schedule supplied by your clinician. Wash hands after application unless the hands are the treatment site, and avoid covering the area unless told to do so. Moisturiser can support the skin barrier, but use it in the way your care team recommends.

Do not use a stronger product, extend the course or treat a new body site without review. For broader or difficult-to-control disease, a clinician may discuss Topical Corticosteroids, Oral Corticosteroid Treatment or another option.

Contact a clinician if lesions spread quickly, become painful, ulcerate, bleed or interfere with eating, drinking, sleep or sexual activity. Seek prompt care for eye symptoms or signs of infection such as pus and increasing warmth. Arrange reassessment if treatment causes marked thinning, easy bruising or worsening irritation.

Ask whether the diagnosis has been confirmed, which areas should be treated, how long to use the medicine, and whether a maintenance plan is appropriate. Ask how to protect sensitive skin and what symptoms would suggest a mouth, genital, scalp or eye review.
