Topical antifungal for onychomycosis

Onychomycosis can make a nail yellow, white, brown, thick, brittle, or crumbly. A topical medicine is placed on the nail and nearby skin so it can reach the fungal area. Because nail grows slowly, the damaged portion does not disappear as soon as the fungus is controlled; clearer nail must grow out.

Not every discoloured or thick nail is fungal. Injury, skin disease, and other nail conditions can look similar. Confirmation is especially useful before a long course of treatment or when several nails are involved.

Follow the product directions closely, including preparation of the nail if advised. Keep nails trimmed and dry, use clean tools, and do not share clippers. Treat athlete's foot if present, because fungus on the surrounding skin can re-seed the nail.

Avoid covering the treated nail with cosmetic polish unless your clinician says it is compatible. Take occasional photos in the same light to track growth from the nail base. If the nail becomes painful, lifts, or the surrounding skin becomes inflamed, arrange a review.

Seek medical advice if treatment produces severe irritation, if infection spreads to surrounding skin, or if there is drainage or increasing pain. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced foot sensation should have persistent nail changes assessed promptly.
