What should you know about topical antibiotics for boils?

A boil is a tender, inflamed lump that may contain a pocket of pus around a hair follicle. Cream applied to the surface may not reach a deeper pocket, and using an antibiotic without a clear indication can irritate skin or encourage resistance. The surrounding redness can sometimes represent cellulitis, which may need a different treatment plan.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump yourself. Pressure can push infection into nearby tissue and spread bacteria to other people or body sites. A clinician may decide that warm compresses and observation are enough, or may recommend a procedure or prescribed medicine based on its size, location, and surrounding skin.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Keep the skin clean, cover any drainage with a fresh dressing, and avoid sharing towels, razors, or clothing. Warm, moist compresses may ease discomfort and encourage natural drainage; stop if the skin becomes more painful or irritated. Use only a topical antibiotic that a clinician or pharmacist has recommended for that lesion, and follow its directions.

Arrange a review if the lump is not settling, returns repeatedly, sits on the face or near the eye, or occurs in someone with diabetes or reduced immunity. A clinician may look for a deeper collection and discuss whether a swab, drainage, or another treatment is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading, pain is rapidly worsening, fever develops, red streaks appear, or the boil is near the eye, nose, spine, or genitals. Urgent help is needed if you feel very unwell, confused, faint, or unable to keep fluids down.

Ask whether this is a boil, cellulitis, or another skin problem; whether a topical product can reach the affected area; and whether drainage is needed. Ask how to dress the wound, reduce spread at home, and lower the chance of recurrence.
