Short answer

Pain at the top of the shin can involve nearby muscles, tendons, the knee, or the shin bone itself, and the pattern guides next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pause
Running, jumping, and painful impact activity

Exact tenderness, triggers, and pain at rest

Reading the pain pattern

Pain that follows a change in running, jumping, hills, or training may reflect overload of the muscles and tissues around the upper shin. A small, precise area of bone tenderness, pain that worsens with impact, or discomfort that continues at rest needs attention because a Stress Fracture can develop when bone is repeatedly loaded faster than it recovers. Pain close to the knee may arise from the knee rather than the shin itself. The Shin Pain guide can help you describe location, triggers, and associated symptoms, but it cannot replace an examination.

What to do now

Stop running, jumping, and other impact activity while the pain is being assessed. Use comfortable walking only if it does not increase symptoms, and choose low-load movement that remains pain-free. Supportive footwear may help, but do not use pain relief to push through exercise. Keep a simple record of activity, exact tenderness, swelling, and whether pain appears at rest or overnight. Arrange a clinical review if the pain is focal, persistent, or returns whenever you resume activity.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care after a major impact if the leg looks deformed, you cannot bear weight, or the foot becomes numb, pale, blue, or cold. Get prompt assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain at rest, fever, or a tender spot that remains painful despite stopping impact. These features may require examination and imaging.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the tenderness is coming from bone, muscle, tendon, or the knee, and whether imaging is appropriate. Explain any recent training change, footwear change, fall, nutritional concern, or previous bone injury.

Questions people ask

Is focal shin tenderness different from general soreness?

A small, clearly localised tender area deserves more caution than diffuse soreness, especially when impact makes it worse.

Can I walk with pain at the top of the shin?

Walk only if it is comfortable and does not worsen symptoms; seek assessment if weight-bearing is difficult or pain persists.
