What should you know about too much sneezing and runny nose?

Allergic rhinitis often causes repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, and clear watery drainage, particularly after exposure to pollen, dust, or animals. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy can cause symptoms indoors or after contact. A common cold may add a blocked nose, sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell. Influenza and COVID-19 can also cause respiratory symptoms, often with fever, tiredness, or body aches. Sinusitis may cause facial pressure, reduced smell, and thicker nasal discharge. A runny nose alone does not identify one condition.

Notice when symptoms start, what exposures precede them, and whether the discharge is clear or coloured. Reduce contact with a suspected trigger, wash hands, and drink fluids. Saline nasal spray or rinsing may ease irritation; use clean water and follow the product instructions. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment fits your symptoms and other medicines. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays longer than the label allows, because overuse can worsen blockage.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or come with facial pain, high fever, wheezing, or worsening cough. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, confusion, severe weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Testing may be appropriate when infection symptoms follow a relevant exposure.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic rhinitis, a cold, sinusitis, or another cause; whether allergy testing is useful; and which nasal or oral treatment is suitable with your medical history.
