Too much hyaluronic acid: what to know

Hyaluronic acid is a substance used in some joint injections and other medical procedures. After an injection, temporary tenderness, fullness, or swelling can occur near the treated area. More product does not automatically provide more benefit, and the right amount depends on the joint, product, technique, and treatment plan. Pain or swelling may also reflect irritation, infection, bleeding, or an unrelated joint problem rather than excess material.

Keep the treatment date, product name if available, body area, and symptom changes together. This information helps a clinician distinguish an expected local response from a problem requiring treatment.

Contact the treating clinician before arranging another injection or adding a different product. Rest the treated area from strenuous activity, follow the aftercare instructions you were given, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that has been advised. Do not massage a painful or swollen injection site or take extra medication without checking that it is suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or escalating pain, fever, spreading redness, drainage, marked warmth, or feeling very unwell after an injection. New weakness, numbness, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or faintness may indicate a serious reaction and needs immediate help. Even without these signs, contact the treating team if symptoms are not settling or the joint becomes increasingly difficult to use.
