The short answer

Too much heartburn during pregnancy is often related to pregnancy changes, but persistent, severe, or unusual burning should be discussed with a clinician. Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone or in the upper abdomen, sometimes with sour fluid rising into the throat. Note its timing, food triggers, and whether it affects sleep or eating.

Why it can happen

Hormonal changes can relax the muscle between the stomach and food pipe, while the growing uterus can increase pressure inside the abdomen. Large meals, lying down soon after eating, spicy or fatty foods, and drinks that irritate you may worsen symptoms. Acid Reflux is a related condition in which stomach contents move upward. Gastritis, Hiatus Hernia, or Peptic Ulcer can also cause upper-abdominal discomfort, but heartburn alone cannot distinguish them. Pregnancy symptoms should still be reviewed in context.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after a meal and identify personal triggers rather than removing broad groups of foods unnecessarily. Raise the upper body during sleep if your maternity team considers that comfortable and suitable. Ask a pharmacist, doctor, or midwife before using antacids, supplements, or other medicines. A clinician may recommend an appropriate Acid Reflux Medication after considering your stage of pregnancy, other medicines, and medical history.

When to seek help

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are frequent, wake you repeatedly, make swallowing difficult, cause ongoing vomiting, or do not respond to pregnancy-safe measures. Seek urgent care for chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down also needs urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Could these symptoms be ordinary pregnancy heartburn or another cause? Which foods and medicines should I avoid? Is an Acid Reflux Medication suitable for me? What symptoms mean I should contact maternity services urgently?

Questions people ask

Does pregnancy heartburn harm the baby?

Heartburn is usually a symptom affecting you, but severe symptoms, poor intake, or repeated vomiting should be assessed so you can receive appropriate care.

Can I use an over-the-counter antacid?

Ask a pharmacist, doctor, or midwife first because product ingredients and suitability vary during pregnancy.
