Tonsillitis in pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy does not change the basic causes of tonsillitis: viruses are common, and bacterial infection such as Strep Throat is also possible. Symptoms can include a red or swollen tonsil, Sore Throat, fever, tender neck glands, earache, or a coated tonsil. These features cannot establish the cause alone. The clinician should also know how far along the pregnancy is and about any health conditions or medicines.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose soft foods when swallowing is uncomfortable. Check every medicine, lozenge, or herbal product with a clinician or pharmacist before using it, even if it was familiar before pregnancy. Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly for a high or persistent fever, worsening pain, reduced fluid intake, or symptoms that are not settling. Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, have breathing difficulty, develop a muffled voice, cannot open your mouth properly, or notice rapidly increasing one-sided swelling. Also ask for advice if vomiting or throat pain makes it hard to keep fluids down.

Ask which pain-relief options are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, whether a throat test is indicated, how to manage fever, and which changes need urgent review. Share your pregnancy stage, allergies, current medicines, and any previous reaction to antibiotics.
