What should you know about tongue wart removal?

A wart is a rough or raised growth associated with certain human papillomavirus types, but a similar-looking tongue lesion may be caused by friction, inflammation, a benign overgrowth, or another condition. Location, surface, colour, tenderness, bleeding, and duration help a clinician decide whether it resembles a wart. Mouth tissue is delicate, so treatments designed for ordinary skin may be unsuitable inside the mouth.

A clinician may recommend observation, removal, or a sample for laboratory examination when the appearance is unusual. Treatment aims to remove the visible lesion while limiting injury to the tongue and reducing the chance of ongoing irritation.

Arrange an assessment with a dentist, oral medicine clinician, dermatologist, or another qualified professional. Do not apply over-the-counter wart acids, household freezing products, or caustic substances to the tongue. Avoid biting or picking the area, and mention tobacco use, immune conditions, pregnancy, regular medicines, and any recent change in the lesion. Use gentle oral hygiene and choose foods that do not irritate it.

Arrange prompt review if the lesion grows, becomes painful, repeatedly bleeds, ulcerates, changes colour, or remains present without a clear explanation. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly expanding swelling, or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure. These warning signs require assessment even when a wart seems possible.
