What should you know about toilet paper rash?

Toilet paper rash usually describes irritated skin around the genital or anal area after wiping, and it may result from friction, moisture, or contact with an ingredient. Redness, stinging, itching, small bumps, or raw skin can occur. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Scented, coloured, rough, or treated paper can irritate sensitive skin. Repeated wiping, loose stools, sweating, and dampness can add friction and weaken the skin barrier. A reaction to a product is called Contact Dermatitis. Similar symptoms can also occur with eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection such as Ringworm, or inflammation in a skin fold called Intertrigo. Itching that is intense at night or affects close contacts needs a different assessment, including for Scabies.

Pause scented or textured products and choose plain, unscented paper. Wipe gently without scrubbing, then pat dry. Rinsing with lukewarm water can remove residue; avoid fragranced wipes, deodorising sprays, and harsh soaps. Loose breathable underwear and changing out of damp clothing can reduce rubbing. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or anaesthetic cream internally or repeatedly without advice, because the wrong product can worsen irritation or mask another problem.

Arrange medical care if the rash is spreading, very painful, cracked, weeping, blistered, or not settling after removing likely irritants. Seek prompt help for fever, pus, marked swelling, bleeding, severe pain, or difficulty passing urine or stool. A clinician can examine the exact area and distinguish irritation from infection, eczema, or another condition without assuming that the paper caused it.
