When a nail plate becomes thick or curved, it may lose close contact with the nail bed and grow upward instead of lying flat. Tight footwear, repeated impact, an old injury, or pressure from a neighbouring toe can contribute. Fungal disease may add crumbly material beneath the plate, while psoriasis may cause pitting, ridges, or separation. The pattern across the nail and the condition of nearby skin help distinguish these possibilities.

An upward-growing nail can catch on socks and create pressure at the tip. Do not force it flat or cut deeply into the sides, because small breaks in the surrounding skin can become painful or infected.

Choose shoes with a high, wide toe box and keep the nail edge smooth. Soak briefly only if needed to soften the edge, then dry the foot carefully. Trim small amounts straight across with clean tools rather than trying to reshape the whole plate. If the nail is too hard or curved to manage, a clinician can thin or trim it safely. Confirmed nail fungus may be treated with medicine or a laser option, but thickening alone is not enough to choose a treatment.

Arrange an assessment when the nail repeatedly hits the shoe, affects walking, separates, or continues to change despite roomy footwear. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, bleeding, pus, warmth, spreading redness, fever, or a wound beneath the nail. If diabetes, circulation disease, or reduced sensation affects your feet, get advice before attempting difficult trimming.
