What should you know about Toctino and eczema?

Toctino contains alitretinoin, an oral retinoid prescribed for selected adults with severe, persistent hand eczema. It is not a general moisturiser or a first step for every eczema flare. Eczema can cause itchy, dry, cracked or crusted skin; repeated inflammation may also leave darker or lighter marks after healing. The diagnosis and severity should be checked because contact dermatitis, psoriasis and infection can look similar.

Take Toctino only as prescribed and attend the monitoring appointments your clinician recommends. Tell the prescriber about liver problems, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, medication use and any plans for pregnancy. Pregnancy prevention and testing requirements are strict because retinoids can seriously harm an unborn baby. Use fragrance-free emollients, protect your hands from detergents and wear suitable gloves for wet work. Do not add vitamin A supplements or change the dose without medical advice.

Contact your prescriber promptly for severe headache with visual symptoms, marked mood change, unusual abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, or a serious rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Report a positive pregnancy test immediately and stop taking the medicine only as directed by the treating team. Worsening oozing, crusting, warmth or pain can signal infection and needs assessment.
