How small ocular melanoma may be found

A small ocular melanoma may be found during a detailed eye examination before it causes noticeable vision changes. Eye imaging and specialist assessment then help distinguish a suspicious lesion and plan the next step.

An ophthalmologist may see a pigmented or raised area inside the eye during a dilated examination. Ultrasound can show the lesion’s shape and depth, while photographs and other scans help document its appearance and position. Some people are referred because of blurred vision, flashes, floaters or a visual-field change; others have no symptoms when the finding is noticed.

A suspicious spot is not understood from size alone. Its location, thickness, growth pattern, pigmentation, symptoms and imaging features all contribute to assessment. The specialist may recommend observation with repeat imaging, a biopsy in selected situations, or treatment. Ocular melanoma is different from a surface skin lesion, so an eye cancer team should interpret the findings.

Keep the specialist appointments and bring previous eye records, glasses details and a list of medicines. Ask what the lesion measures, where it sits and whether there is evidence of growth. If treatment is needed, discuss options such as plaque brachytherapy or another form of radiotherapy, including effects on vision and follow-up needs. Ask how the other eye and your general health will be monitored.

Seek urgent eye assessment for sudden loss of vision, a new curtain or shadow, severe eye pain, marked redness, or a sudden increase in flashes and floaters. Contact your specialist promptly for a noticeable change in vision or a new persistent visual-field gap. These symptoms do not establish melanoma, but they should not be ignored.

Where is the lesion and how was it measured? Is observation reasonable, and when would imaging be repeated? What features would lead to treatment? How might brachytherapy or radiotherapy affect vision? Which changes should prompt an urgent call?
