What should you know about a TNBC tumor?

TNBC stands for triple-negative breast cancer. The word negative describes laboratory testing of the tumour, not whether the cancer is present. Because hormone-blocking medicines and HER2-directed medicines are not expected to target these cells, the pathology result helps the oncology team choose a different combination of treatments.

The report may also describe tumour size, grade, lymph-node findings, and other markers. A biopsy provides tissue for these tests. Your team may consider inherited BRCA-related findings or other features when discussing options; a TNBC result alone does not predict one person's exact course.

Ask for a copy of the pathology report and have the team explain each marker in ordinary language. Treatment can include chemotherapy before or after surgery, and immunotherapy for selected situations. Some people with relevant inherited changes may be considered for PARP inhibitor therapy. The sequence depends on the tumour and your overall health.

Bring a medication list and note questions about fertility, pregnancy, heart health, neuropathy, and infection precautions before treatment starts. A breast cancer specialist can coordinate imaging, surgery, medicines, and follow-up.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, new shortness of breath, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, or sudden swelling or redness around a wound. During treatment, do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel acutely unwell; the team can tell you where to be assessed.
