What should you know about TNBC symptoms?

Triple-negative breast cancer can present with a new lump or thickened area in the breast, a change in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, redness, swelling, or nipple inversion. Nipple discharge, especially when unexpected, may also need assessment. A lump in the armpit can reflect a swollen lymph node.

These changes also occur with benign breast conditions, infection, hormonal changes, or injury. TNBC is identified through clinical assessment, imaging, and tissue testing; the appearance or feel of a change cannot show its receptor status.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new or persistent breast or armpit change, even if it is not painful. Note when it began, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is discharge, fever, or skin change. Do not squeeze a lump or delay evaluation while waiting for it to disappear.

If testing confirms TNBC, your team may discuss Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, or PARP Inhibitor Therapy according to stage, pathology, and genetic findings. Treatment decisions do not come from symptoms alone.

Contact a clinician promptly for a new lump, rapid breast swelling, persistent skin or nipple change, bloody discharge, or an enlarged armpit node. Seek urgent care for severe infection symptoms, rapidly worsening swelling, breathing difficulty, or sudden neurological changes. A breast symptom is not proof of cancer, but a timely examination can clarify its cause.

What tests are appropriate for this change? When will I receive the imaging or pathology result? If cancer is found, how are receptor results confirmed? What symptoms should make me call sooner?
