TIV stands for trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine. It contains inactivated viral material rather than live influenza virus, so it cannot cause influenza infection. The vaccine is designed for the strains selected for that season; protection is not the same as treating an illness already underway. Immune protection develops after vaccination and can vary between people. You may still develop a respiratory infection from another virus or an influenza strain not well matched to the vaccine.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse or severe weakness soon after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a high or persistent fever, worsening illness, or symptoms that concern you. A reaction at the injection site that becomes increasingly painful, hot or swollen also deserves medical advice.
