Tips for Sweaty Feet

Short answer
Keep sweaty feet dry with breathable footwear, regular sock changes, careful washing and drying, and clinician-guided antiperspirant or iontophoresis when daily measures are not enough.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Keep dry
- Dry between toes and change damp socks promptly.
- Treatment options
- Prescription antiperspirant and iontophoresis may be considered with guidance.
Why feet may sweat heavily
Sweating cools the body, but some people produce more sweat on the soles, sometimes even when they are resting or cool. Damp skin softens and becomes more prone to friction, odour, cracks, and infection. Itching, peeling, or scaling between the toes can occur with athlete’s foot. Sweating that is new, widespread, occurs during sleep, or comes with other symptoms deserves assessment because medicines and medical conditions can contribute.
Daily foot-care measures
Wash feet gently and dry carefully between the toes. Change socks when damp and choose moisture-wicking or breathable materials. Alternate shoes so each pair can dry fully, and use open footwear when practical and safe. Avoid sharing shoes or towels, and do not apply moisturiser between the toes if the area stays moist. A prescription antiperspirant may reduce sweating when recommended for your skin. Iontophoresis is another clinician-guided option for persistent sweating; ask about suitability, especially if you have implanted electrical devices or damaged skin.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for persistent wetness, strong odour, peeling, cracks, sores, pain, or recurrent athlete’s foot. Seek prompt care if a foot becomes hot, swollen, increasingly painful, or drains, or if redness spreads and you feel unwell. Sudden sweating with dizziness, chest symptoms, weakness, or confusion needs urgent medical attention. A clinician can check for infection and select treatment based on the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Is this excessive sweating or another foot problem? Could athlete’s foot be present? Would prescription antiperspirant or iontophoresis suit me? How should I protect cracked skin and prevent recurrence?

Questions people ask
Can sweaty feet cause athlete’s foot?
Damp conditions can make fungal infection easier to develop, but sweating alone does not confirm athlete’s foot.
When should I consider iontophoresis?
Discuss it when troublesome foot sweating continues despite careful drying, footwear changes, and other basic measures.
