What should you know about tiny water blisters on fingers?

Small, deep-seated blisters on the sides of fingers or palms often occur with dyshidrotic eczema and may itch intensely before they dry and peel. Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis can cause blisters where soaps, solvents, gloves, metals or other substances touch the skin. A blistering rash with fever or a wider body rash can occur with infections such as chickenpox. One-sided painful grouped blisters may suggest shingles, while damaged or sun-exposed skin may blister after sunburn. These patterns overlap, so examination may be needed.

Do not deliberately pop the blisters. Wash gently, pat dry and protect the area with a clean non-stick dressing if friction is likely. Pause new soaps, detergents, solvents, gloves or jewellery until the trigger is clearer, and use a bland moisturiser on intact surrounding skin. If the blisters are itchy, painful, spreading or recurring, arrange a medical review; treatment depends on the cause and may include prescribed anti-inflammatory or antiviral therapy.

Seek urgent assessment for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, numbness, difficulty moving a finger, or blisters near the eyes or mouth. Get prompt advice for one-sided grouped blisters, a new widespread blistering illness, or a rash after close contact with someone who is unwell. A clinician can decide whether infection testing or antiviral treatment is appropriate.

Note when the blisters began, whether they itch or hurt, whether both hands are involved, what touched the skin, and whether you have fever or a body rash.
