What should you know about tingling pins and needles in hands?

Tingling pins and needles in the hands can come from temporary nerve pressure, circulation changes, or an underlying health condition. The sensation may feel prickly, buzzing, burning, or numb, and it can affect one hand or both.

A hand that tingles after you sleep on your arm may settle when pressure is removed. Repeated symptoms can occur when a nerve is irritated at the wrist, elbow, neck, or spine. Peripheral Neuropathy may affect sensation in the hands, while Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism can contribute to nerve symptoms. Anxiety or rapid breathing during Panic Disorder can also cause tingling around the hands and mouth.

Change position, loosen anything tight around the wrist, and gently move the fingers. Note when the tingling starts, how long it lasts, whether it follows an activity, and whether weakness, pain, or loss of grip occurs. Avoid leaning on an elbow or wrist for long periods. Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms keep returning, spread, disturb sleep, or affect everyday tasks.

Seek emergency help for sudden tingling with facial drooping, new weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, or difficulty walking, because these can be signs of Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack. Seek prompt care if the hand becomes cold or changes colour, or if numbness follows an injury. Ongoing symptoms without these warning signs still deserve a GP assessment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests nerve pressure, a medicine effect, or a medical condition; whether your strength, reflexes, sensation, blood sugar, thyroid function, or vitamin B12 need checking; and what changes should prompt urgent review.
