Tinea Versicolor and Malassezia

Malassezia is part of the normal community of skin organisms, so finding the name does not mean that someone has caught an infection from another person. In tinea versicolor, the yeast affects the outer skin and can change how nearby pigment is produced or displayed. This creates lighter, darker, pink, or tan patches, sometimes with fine scale or mild itch. Warmth, moisture, sweating, and oily skin can encourage the process, but the condition can occur without any single obvious trigger. Eczema and pigment disorders can resemble it.

A clinician may diagnose tinea versicolor by examining the pattern and scale, with a surface test when needed. Treatment aims to reduce the excess yeast on the skin. Options can include topical antifungal therapy, a medicated shampoo used on selected areas, or oral antifungal therapy when a clinician considers it appropriate. Follow the prescribed contact time and application instructions; more product does not work faster and may irritate the skin. Dry sweaty skin promptly, wear breathable clothing, and avoid aggressive exfoliation. Recurrence can happen because the yeast remains part of normal skin life.

Arrange a medical review if the patches are rapidly changing, painful, very inflamed, blistered, crusted, or draining, or if fever develops. Seek advice for involvement of the eyes or mouth, severe itch, or widespread irritation after an antifungal. If the rash does not respond as expected or returns often, the clinician can reconsider the diagnosis and adjust the plan. Persistent colour difference alone does not prove ongoing Malassezia activity.
