Tinea Versicolor on the Arms: Treatment Guide

The condition causes flat patches that may be lighter or darker than nearby skin. They can have a powdery scale, mild itch, or no sensation at all. The patches may appear on the upper arms and can extend toward the shoulders or chest. A clinician may inspect the scale and colour pattern, sometimes using a simple examination method to distinguish it from dermatitis, pigment disorders, or another rash. The location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

For limited arm involvement, a topical antifungal is often considered. A medicated shampoo may be prescribed for broader areas, while oral antifungal treatment is reserved for situations where a clinician considers it appropriate. Apply or take treatment exactly as directed, and avoid rubbing the skin harshly. Use moisturiser if the surrounding skin is dry, and protect the arms from excess sun so colour contrast does not become stronger. Do not judge treatment only by pigment, since the yeast can clear before normal colour returns.

Seek assessment if the patches are rapidly spreading, intensely itchy, painful, cracked, blistered, or producing discharge. Return to the clinician if the rash does not improve after the advised course, keeps returning, or looks different from previous episodes. Urgent advice is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a widespread reaction after applying a product.

Ask whether both arms need treatment, how to apply the product around the elbows and shoulders, whether household products should be avoided, and what signs show that a follow-up examination is needed.
