Tinea Versicolor After Sunburn: What to Know

Tinea versicolor is a common surface-yeast condition. The patches may be lighter, darker, pink, or tan, with fine scaling or mild itch. Sun exposure can deepen the surrounding tan or leave recently burned skin red, creating stronger contrast around the patches. A sunburn does not create the yeast infection, and the condition is not a sign of poor hygiene or a contagious infection spread by casual contact.

Let burned skin settle and avoid further tanning while it heals. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing, and do not scrub or peel the area. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment, medicated shampoo therapy used on the skin, or oral antifungal treatment when the area is extensive or has not responded. Follow the product instructions closely; colour may remain uneven after the yeast is controlled because pigment recovery is slower than treatment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the patches are spreading, repeatedly returning, very itchy, painful, swollen, blistered, or oozing. Seek prompt medical advice for a severe sunburn, fever, confusion, dehydration, or eye involvement. Assessment is also sensible when pale or dark patches have no fine scale, because several skin conditions can look similar.
